The following are the ages (years) of 5 people in a room:

23, 20, 15, 12, 17
A person enters the room.
The mean age of the 6 people is now 19.
What is the age of the person who entered the room?​

The mean is calculated as

mean =
(sum)/(count)

let x be the age of the person entering the room , then


(23+20+15+12+17+x)/(6) = 19 ( multiply both sides by 6 )

87 + x = 114 ( subtract 87 from both sides )

x = 27

The age of the person who entered the room is 27

Answer:

multiply 6 by 19 to get the total age of the six people in the room then add the ages of the 5 people in the room and subtract it from the total of the 6 to get your answer
