Using set notation

M is mathematics

E is English

n(M) = 85%

n(E) = 80%

n(M n E) = 73%

n(M U E)' are percentage of people that failed both subnets

Hence n(U) = n(M U E) + n(M U E)'

n(MUE) = n(M) + n(E) - n(MuE)

n(MUE) = 85 + 80 - 73

n(MUE) = 92%

Since n(U) = n(M U E) + n(M U E)'

100 = 92 + n(M U E)'

n(M U E)' = 100 - 92

n(M U E)' = 8%

Hence 8% of candidates failed in both subjects
