Given:

inches of rain that fell = 2 1/2 inches

duration = 4 3/4 hrs

hence the unit rate in inches per hour

= inches of rain that fell ÷ duration

= 2 1/2 ÷ 4 3/4 (for easy mathematical manipulation, we will express the fractions as improper fractions)

= 5/2 ÷ 19/4

= 5/2 x 4/19

= 10/19

= 0.526316
