Can someone please help me with this question please answer it correctly and please explain.

A jar contains nickels and dimes. There is a total of 25 coins in the jar. The value of the coins is $1.75. How many nickels and how many dimes are in the jar?

Answer:

  • 15 nickels and 10 dimes

Explanation:

  • Dimes - d, dime = 10c, total dimes = 10d
  • Nickels - n, nickel = 5 c, total nickels = 5n
  • $1.75 = 175 c

Equations:

  • d + n = 25
  • 10d + 5n = 175

Multiply the first equation by 5 and subtract from the second one:

  • 10d + 5n - 5d - 5n = 175 - 125
  • 5d = 50
  • d = 10

Find n:

  • n = 25 - d = 25 - 10 = 15
