13 - 5y = x

transfer x to the left side and 13 to the right side of the equation for the second equation:

-x - 5y = -13 now find the sum of both equations:

x + 2y - x - 5y = 7 - 13 add/subtract like terms

-3y = -6 divide both sides by -3

y = 2

To find the value of x replace y with 2:

x + 2*2 = 7

x + 4 = 7 subtract 4 from both sides

x = 3
