Niagara Falls was formed about twelve thousand years ago. The movement and melting of glaciers formed the Great Lakes at the end of the last Ice Age. Then, water flowing from one of the Great Lakes to another carved the Niagara River and the falls. Back then, the falls were seven miles downstream from where they are now. Today, the edge of the falls continues to wear down and fall back about one foot per year. Even so, the falls are expected to be around for tens of thousands of years.
