Why do some materials conduct electricity better than others? How can electrical conductivity be used to distinguish between metals and nonmetals?

For the conduction of electricity, free electrons are required.

Those materials having free electrons conduct electricity.

Metals are usually good conductors of electricity while non-metals are poor conductors of electricity.

Thus, in this way electrical conductivity can be used to distinguish between metals and nonmetals.
