Mr. Bacon and Mr. Arroyo went to a CANDY SHOP.

Mr. Bacon BOUGHT 2 CANDIES and 3 LICORICE STICK for $5.25.
Mr. Arroyo BOUGHT 1 CANDIES and 2 LICORICE STICK for $3.25

What is the cost of 1 CANDY and 1 LICORICE

Use elimination:

2c + 3l = 5.25

c + 2l = 3.25

multiply the second equation by -2:

-2c - 4l = -6.50

Add it to the first equation:

-2 - 4l = -6.50

+ 2c + 3l = 3.25

= l = 1.25

Now we know what the licorice costs, substitute it in for l:

c + 2(1.25) = 3.25

c + 2.5 = 3.25

c = 3.25 - 2.5

c = 0.75
