We are asked to solve the following system of equations using the elimination method:

x + 2 y = 16

-7 x- 3 y = 24

so we select to multiply the first equation by "7", that way we will be able to eliminate the term in "x" by simple combining term by term the two equations:

7 (x + 2 y) = 7*16

7 x + 14 y = 112

now we combine this new expression term by term with the second equation:

7 x + 14 y = 112

-7 x - 3 y = 24

_____________

0 + 11 y = 136

solve for y by dividing both sides by 11:

y = 136/11

Now we use this value to solve for x in the first equation:

x + 2 (136/11) = 16

x +
