The cross section gotten from a shape depends on the orientation of the plane used in cutting the shape.

If the plane is cutting the cylinder vertically, the cross section obtained will be a rectangle

If the plane is cutting the cylinder horizontally, the cross section obtained will be a circle

if the plane is cutting the cylinder in slant manner, the cross section will be an oval

A line is not a shape and we can't get it whne the plane cuts the cylinder.
