The company takes 1 3/8 hrs to remove 2 1/2 metric tonnes of dirt

in 1 hour they will remove x metric tonnes of dirt

(1(3)/(8))/(1)\text{ = }(2(1)/(2))/(x)\text{ that is by way of ratio}
((11)/(8))/(1)=((5)/(2))/(x)
(11)/(8)x\text{ =}(5)/(2)\text{ That is by cross multiplying}
\begin{gathered} 11x\text{ }*2=5*8 \\ 22x\text{ = 40} \\ x=\text{ }(40)/(22) \\ x=(20)/(11) \\ or\text{ x=1}(9)/(11)\text{metric tonnes of dirt per hour} \end{gathered}
