4y^(2)+5y+9

1) Since the total length of that beam is expressed by this polynomial:

5y^2+5y+1

and a fraction of it is expressed by:

y^2-8

2) We can find the remaining length by subtracting from 5y²+5y+1 the fraction y²-8

\begin{gathered} 5y^2+5y+1-(y^2-8) \\ \\ 5y^2+5y+1-y^2+8 \\ \\ 4y^2+5y+9 \end{gathered}

Thus, the answer is 4y²+5y+9
