What does a person gain by purchasing an indulgence? How did this effect the political and economic power and authority of the church?

When a person purchases an indulgence, they are purchasing admission to heaven. As most would prefer going to heaven than hell, they invest heavily in indulgences (church grows economically stronger) while regarding the church with respect (political and authoritative power).
