Given:

The cost of the item is $700 and the tax rate = 6%.

\text{Sales tax=}\frac{\text{cost of item}* tax\text{ rate}}{100}

Substitute cost of the item = $700 and the tax rate = 6, we get

\text{Sales tax=}(700*6)/(100)

\text{Sales tax=}7*6=42

\text{Sales tax= \$ 42}
\text{Total cost =cost of item + sales tax}

Substitute cost of item=700 and sales tax=42, we get

\text{Total cost =7}00+42=\text{ \$ 742}

Hence we get sales tax= $42 and total cost = $ 742.
