A linear function passes through the two points (-1,2) and (2x,8) having slope of 1/2. What is the value of x?

we know that

The slope between two points is equal to

m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

in this problem we have

(x1,y1)=(-1,2)

(x2,y2)=(2x,8)

substitute the given values in the formula

m=(8-2)/(2x+1)

m=6/(2x+1)

rEmember that

m=1/2 ------> given problem

so

1/2=6/(2x+1)

solve for x

multiply in cross

2x+1=12

2x=12-1

2x=11

x=5.5
