I don’t know how to tell if there is sub-chains and I don’t know how to count the carbon atoms in the longest chain. Can you help me?

1) Name.

3,3,4,4-tetramethylhexane.

2) hexane.

This part of the name tells us how long in the parent chain.

Hex = six.

Other suffixes

Pent = five.

But = four.

Prop = three.

Eth = two.

Meth = one.

ane. This part tells us that every bond between carbon atoms in the parent chain is single.

3) tetramethyl.

Tetra. This prefix means four.

Methyl. This is called an alkyl. It is derived from methane. So, it has one carbon.

4) 3,3,4,4.

These numbers are the position where methyl groups are bonded.

The longest carbon chain will be six-carbon long.

The molecule has four methyl functional groups. These count as subchains.

5) Diagram

In black, the parent chain.

In red, the methyl fuctional groups.
