Mathematical Models
We can build mathematical models to explain and predict situations in real life.
This example is about the situation of Frankie who takes credit hours at two different colleges. One of them charges $85 per credit hour and the other charges $108 per credit hour.
At the end of the question, we are told she takes s credit hours at Southeast and we also know the total credit hours are 12 in both colleges.
This means that she is taking 12 - s hours at Lakeside College.
The total amount she paid is:
T = 85*s + 108*(12 - s)
Operating:
T = 85*s + 108*12 - 108*s
T = 1296 - 23s
