we can write an equation from the statement

All together, Michael and his two friends have exactly $30 to spend on lunch. Hot dogs cost 3.50 and drinks cost $1.50

3.50h+1.50d=30

where h is the number of hot dogs and d the number of drinks

if they each get two hot dogs

then replace h=2x3=6

\begin{gathered} 3.50(6)+1.50d=30 \\ 21+1.50d=30 \end{gathered}

then to find the number of drinks we solve d

\begin{gathered} 21+1.50d=30 \\ 1.50d=30-21 \\ 1.50d=9 \\ d=(9)/(1.50) \\ \\ d=6 \end{gathered}

they can buy 6 drinks
