In the function above, the slope will be multiplied by -4, and the y-value of the y-intercept will be decreased by 1 unit. Which of the following graphs best represents a new function? (The graphs with letters underneath, are the ones we're looking for for the answer. The singular graph is the previous graph.)

step 1

Find the equation of the original graph

we need two points

so

(0,-2) and (4,0)

Find the slope

m=(0+2)/(4-0)

m=2/4

m=1/2

m=0.5

Find the equation of the line in slope intercept form

y=mx+b

we have

m=0.5

b=-2

substitute

y=0.5x-2

step 2

Find the equation of the new function

so

we have that

the slope will be multiplied by -4------> m=0.5(-4)=-2

the y-value of the y-intercept will be decreased by 1 unit -----> b=-2-1=-3

therefore

the new equation is

y=-2x-3

using a graphing tool
