Statins are used to keep cholesterol in check and are a top-selling drug in the U.S. The equation:S−1.9x=5.4 gives the amount of sales ( S ) of statin in billions of dollars x years after 1998. According to this equation, how much will/did people in the U.S. spend on statins in the year 2008?

Recall that to evaluate an equation at a given value we substitute the variable with the given value.

Evaluating the given equation at

x=2008-1998=10

we get:

S-1.9*10=5.4.

Simplifying the above equation we get:

S-19=5.4.

Adding 19 to the above equation we get:

\begin{gathered} S-19+19=5.4+19, \\ S=24.4. \end{gathered}

Answer: People in the U.S. will spend 24.4 billion dollars on statins in 2008.
