Annika claims that the expression 4(2c+4) is equivalent to 12c + 8 because when she plugs in 2 for c, both of the expressions equal 32. Is Annika correct that 4(2c+4) is equivalent to 12c + 8? Explain how you know.

They are not equivalent

because for other values of c aside from 2,

4(2c+4) is not equal to 12c + 8

For example,

when c = 0

4(2c+4) = 4(0+4)=16

and

12c+8 = 0+8=8
