Holli has three fewer than twice the amount of books that Laura has. If Laura has b books, what expression can represent the amount that Holli has? Extension: James has twice the amount of books that Holli has, what expression can represent the amount that James has?

We are told that Holli has three fewer than twice the amount of books LAura has. This means that we need to multiply the number of books that Holli has by 2 and subtract three from it, like this:

H=2b-3

Where "H" is the number of books that Holli has and "b" the number of books that Laura has. We are also told that James has twice the number of books that Holli has, therefore, if "J" is the number of books that James has, then:

J=2H

Replacing the value of H:

J=2(2b-3)
