Suppose that there are two types of tickets to a show: advance and same-day. The combined cost of one advance ticket and one same-day ticket is $70. For one performance, 25 advance tickets and 35 same-day tickets were sold. The total amount paid for the tickets was $2050. What was the price of each kind of ticket?

Answer:

You can use the method of substitution.

Let the advance and same-day tickets be x and y respectively.

x + y = $70 ---> (1)

25x + 35y = $2050 ---> (2)

From Statement (1):

Let (1) × 25

25x + 25y = $1750

10y = $2050 - $1750

= $300

y = $300 ÷ 10

= $30 ---> (3)

From Statement (3):

Substitute (3) into (1)

x + $30 = $70

x = $70 - $30

= $40

Advance ticket: $40

Same-day ticket: $30
