I wonder how many people, especially now, have read the last sentence of the Declaration.

It makes clear that it is almost a declaration of war: it does almost everything but say that.

  • It says it no longer recognizes Great Britain as the soverign head of state.
  • Because Britain has been such a poor administrator of the colonies, the Declaration declares itself to be free of such a tyrant.
  • That what made Britain have ties to the United States, will have those ties dissolved
  • That those powers formerly held by the crown (like declaring war) will be dissolved,
  • and finally, the declaration affirms that each colonist will support each other colonist in the pursuit of this tenants of this new freedom.
