The total amout of balloons is:

3+5+2+2=12

5 out of those 12 balloons are labelled medium-sized. Then, 7 out of 12 balloons do not display a letter M.

The chances of hitting a balloon labelled M are 5/12 and the chances of hitting a balloon other than a balloon labelled M are 7/12.

Therefore, the answers are:

a) 7/12

b) 5/12
