Given:

\begin{gathered} p(t)=2t+17t^3-8t^5 \\ q(t)=9t^4+31 \end{gathered}

Find: the leading term for p(t) and q(t)

Explanation:

p(t)=-8t^5+17t^3+2t

leading degree in p(t) is 5 and leading term in p(t) is -8.

q(t)=9t^4+31

leading degree in q(t) is 4 and leading term in q(t) is 9.

\begin{gathered} R(t)=(p(t))/(q(t)) \\ =(-8)/(9) \end{gathered}

Final answer: the required answer is

(-8)/(9)
