Excluding hydropower, U.S. power plants used renewable energy sources to generate 105 million megawatt

hours of electricity in 2007. By 2012, the amount of electricity generated had increased to 219 million megawatt

hours.

Use the model to predict the number of megawatt hours that will be generated in 2017.

Let

x -----> the number of years since 2007

y -----> the number of megawatt hours in millions

we have

For year 2007 -------> x=0

For year 2012 ------> x=5

so

we have the ordered pairs

(0,105) and (5, 219)

Find the slope

m=(219-105)/(5-0)

m=22.8

The linear equation in slope intercept form is equal to

y=mx+b

where

m=22.8

b=105 (the initial val
