Charlie rented a truck for one day. There was a base fee of $14.99, and there was an additional charge of 74 cents for each mile driven. Charlie had to pay $190.37 when he returned the truck. For how many miles did he drive the truck?

The total cost can be represented with the addition of the base fee plus the amount due to the person driving x miles at a charge of $0.74 per mile

Then we set the following equation:

Total cost = $14.99 + $0.74 * x

SInce the person paid a total of $190.37, then we replace the total cost with $190.37 and solve for x:

190.37 = 14.99 + 0.74 x

subtract 14.99 from both sides:

190.37 - 14.99 = 0.74 x

175.38 = 0.74 x

divide both sides by 0.74 to isolate x on one side:

175.38 / 0.74 = x

x = 237

the person drove 237 miles.
