first we set the equation to zero


\begin{gathered} x^2+14x+17-4=0 \\ x^2+14x+13=0 \end{gathered}

now identify the coefficients

a is 1, b is 14 and c is 13

Then use the formula of the discriminant


b^2-4ac

and replace


\begin{gathered} (14)^2-4(1)(13) \\ 196-52 \\ =144 \end{gathered}

the discriminant value is 144

Factor formula


x=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt[]{b^2-4ac}}{2a}

the discriminant is the one found within the root
