To obtain the total amount of apples Gierum will use to bake her apple pies, the following steps are necessary:

Step 1: Write out the information given in the question, as follows:

\begin{gathered} \Rightarrow\text{Previous amount of apples = 21 pounds} \\ \Rightarrow\text{New amount of apples = 2}(1)/(2)*\text{Previous amount of apples } \\ \Rightarrow Amount\text{ of the Ms Gierum will use =}(1)/(2)*\text{New amount of apples} \end{gathered}

Step 2: Use the information to solve the question by substituting in values where necessary, as follows:

\begin{gathered} \text{Previous amount of apples = 21 pounds} \\ \text{New amount of apples = 2}(1)/(2)*\text{Previous amount of apples }=\text{2}(1)/(2)*21 \\ \Rightarrow\text{New amount of apples}=\text{2}(1)/(2)*21=(5)/(2)*21=(105)/(2)=52.5\text{ pounds} \end{gathered}

Now:

\begin{gathered} Amount\text{ of the Ms Gierum will use =}(1)/(2)*\text{New amount of apples} \\ \Rightarrow Amount\text{ of the Ms Gierum will use =}(1)/(2)*52.5=(52.5)/(2)=26.25 \\ \Rightarrow Amount\text{ of the Ms Gierum will use}=26.25\text{ pounds} \end{gathered}

Therefore, total amount of apples Gierum will use to bake her apple pies is 26.25 pies
