(x)/(y) =(1)/(3) → ( 1 )

  • Use cross multiplication to the above equation.

3x = y → ( 2 )

x + y = 12 → ( 3 )

  • Now you can put 3x instead of y to equation (3) according to equation (2).

Let us solve.

x + y = 12

x + 3x = 12

  • And now you can solve the above equation and find the value of x.

4x = 12

Divide both sides by 4.

x = 3

  • Now we can put 3 instead of x to any equation here and find the value of y.

Let us take equation ( 2 )

3x = y

3 × 3 = y

9 = y
