"half of the difference of nine and e" can be written as

(1)/(2)(9-e)

and "four less than e" is

4-e

If they are the same, we can write:

\begin{gathered} (1)/(2)(9-e)=4-e \\ 9-e=2(4-e) \\ 9-e=8-2e \\ -e+2e=8-9 \\ e=-1 \end{gathered}

The value of e is e=-1.
