We have two points:

P1 = (-1, 1)

P2 = (7, -4)

The midpoint of two points is defined as:

M = (P1 + P2) / 2

Replacing the values:

M = ( (-1, 1) + (7, -4) ) / 2 = ( (-1 + 7, 1 - 4) ) / 2 = (6, -3) / 2

The midpoint is:

M = (3, -1.5)
