Why can't x and x^2 be combined (why aren't they like terms)

Because, thinking in a geometric way, we can not combine area and length so x^2, that represent area, can not be added with x which represents length. Other way to think about this is that we can only con combine equal terms, the fact that x^2 has an exponent implies that is not the same term than x, therefore, we can not combine them
