4x-3 < 13

solve for x

adds 3 both sides

4x-3+3 < 13+3

4x< 16

divide by 4 both sides

4x/4 < 16/4

x< 4

the solution is the interval (-infinite, 4)

All real numbers less than 4

In a number line the solution is the shaded area at left of x=4 (open circle)

5x+10> 14x-8

solve for x

5x-14x > -8-10

-9x > -18

multiply by -1 both sides

9x < 18

divide by 9 both sides

x < 2
