Solving an equation

For the equation

6x + 2y = 12

We want to know what number is y, then we bring the terms that have not y to the other side of the "=":

6x + 2y = 12

-6x + 6x + 2y = - 6x + 12 [substracting -6x both sides]

2y = -6x + 12 [-6x + 6x =0]

y = (-6x + 12)/2 [dividing by 2 both sides]

y = (-6x/2) + (12/2) [distributive property]

y = -3x + 6 [since -6/2 = -3 and 12/2 = 6]

Answer: y= -3x + 6
