Step 1

Given;

(1)/(3)-(1)/(12)

Required; To write the subtraction so that the denominators are all 12. Then subtract.

Step 2

Use equivalent fractions to make the denominator of 1/3 12

\begin{gathered} (1)/(3)=(x)/(12) \\ 12=3x \\ (3x)/(3)=(12)/(3) \\ x=4 \end{gathered}

Therefore, we will have;

(1)/(3)-(1)/(12)=(4)/(12)-(1)/(12)
(4)/(12)-(1)/(12)=(3)/(12)=(1)/(4)

The answer will thus be;

(1)/(3)-(1)/(12)=(4)/(12)-(1)/(12)=\frac{3}{12\text{ }}\text{ which is =}(1)/(4)

Answer = 3/12 or 1/4 when reduced
