A carpenter cut a board that was 10 feet long into two pieces. The longer piece is 2 feet longer than three times the length of the shorter piece. What is the length of each piece?

x+3x+2=10

4x=10-2

4x=8

x=8/4

x=2 ft. for the shorter piece./

3*2+2=6+2=8 ft. for the longer piece.
