The slope of a line passing through the coordinates (x₁, y₁ ) and (x₂, y₂) is calculated using the formula:

m\text{ = }(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)

Since the line passes through the points (3, 8) and (-4,-2):

x₁ = 3, y₁= 8, x₂ = -4, y₂ = -2

The slope will therefore be:

\begin{gathered} m\text{ = }(-2-8)/(-4-3) \\ m\text{ = }(-10)/(-7) \\ m\text{ = }(10)/(7) \\ m\text{ = 1}(3)/(7) \end{gathered}
