The figure presented can be divided into 3 smaller shapes to help us calculating the area. Those shapes are

The red and green areas are rectangles, and the blue area is a trapezoid. The area of a rectangle is given by the product between its distinct sides. The green area is

36*8=288

The red area is

4*8=32

The area of a trapezoid is given by the sum of its distinct basis values, multiplied by the height, and then divided by 2. The smaller base of this trapezoid measures 2 yd, the height is 8 yd, and the bigger base measures 8 yd. The area of the trapezoid is

((2+8)*8)/(2)=(10*8)/(2)=(80)/(2)=40

Now, the total area of the figure is the sum of those areas.

288+32+40=360

The area of this figure is 360 yd².
