How do I solve:7/8+y= -1/8

We are given the following equation


(7)/(8)+y=-(1)/(8)

Let us solve the equation for variable y

Our goal is to separate out the variable y

Subtract 7/8 from both sides of the equation.


\begin{gathered} (7)/(8)-(7)/(8)+y=-(1)/(8)-(7)/(8) \\ y=-(1)/(8)-(7)/(8) \end{gathered}

Since the denominators of the two fractions are the same, simply add the numerators.


\begin{gathered} y=-(1)/(8)-(7)/(8) \\ y=(-1-7)/(8) \\ y=(-8)/(8) \\ y=-1 \end{gathered}

Therefore, the value of y is -1
