Ellie Wiesel uses words that give off negative emotions such as “fought” and “starving” to help you connect with the passage and pick up on the struggling the Jewish experienced during the holocaust. We know the Jewish dealt with cruelty because there was a stampede of starving men who felt the need to fight over the bread.Elie makes the reader understand just how desperate the men were when the passage says “Dozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs.” Allowing us to not only feel for but also make out an image of just how difficult these times were for the Jews.
