Habitat" is where something lives. "Niche" implies a more transactional analysis of its energy and informational interactions there. "Niche" is used both in the ecological and the cell biological literature (e.g. the niche for stem cells in the adult mammalian brain). For example: A fox's habitat may be a certain kind of forest.
