How can the reader best interpret the theme of a story?

There is more than 1 way. I'm going to be giving 4 ways.

1. Look for recurring images.
2. Ask questions.
3. Identify the different tools the author uses to express theme.
4. Keep a notebook of notes while reading, and then compare all once finished reading.
