Answer:
Following are the main reasons for the decline of the Abbasid Caliphate:
1. Due to inefficiency of the central government at Baghdad, several autonomous dynasties gained control over the areas within the Abbasid caliphate.
2. The systems of government weakened leading to civil wars.
3. The heavy taxations imposed on people and farmers resulted in the decline of economic and agricultural production.
4. Hulago 'Halaku' Khan attacked Baghdad. The siege of Baghdad by Mongols continued for many days. When they captured the city, they burned and destroyed all the famous buildings, learning institutes, forts, gardens, and even libraries. The Mongols killed the men, children and women. Bagdad, which was famous for its grandeur, modern education, and Islamic architecture, was completely ruined. The books in the house of wisdom were ripped and throw in the Tigris River which became black with ink.
The 37th, and last Abbasid caliph was assassinated in 1258 by the Mongols, marking the nd of the Abbasid Caliphate.
