Samantha has a total of 12 chickens. If she has 3 times as many chickens as dogs, write and solve an equation to determine the number of dogs she has.

3x = 15; x = 5
3x = 12; x = 4
x + 3 = 12; x = 9
x − 3 = 12; x = 15

Answer: B; 3x = 12; x = 4.

Explanation:

To solve this question you have to use the vocabulary to help you. When it says, "she has 3 TIMES as many chickens as dogs..." It means that you have to multiply. This gets rid of answers C and D. It also says, "Samantha has a TOTAL of 12 chickens. This eliminates answer A because it says that the total is 15, which, as you can see, is incorrect.

3x = 12 First you have to divide by 3 on both sides.

x = 4 This is your answer, x = 4

The answer is in fact, B; 3x = 12; x = 4.
