Miles bought a pad of paper and some colored pencils. The pad of paper cost $10. The colored pencils cost $2 each. He had a coupon for 20% off. Miles went to the store with $36. He came home with $4. Miles wrote an equation to find , the number of colored pencils he bought. Then he tried to solve the equation.

First you multiply 0.8 by 10 and 2c. when you multiply by 10 you get 8, when you multiply by 2c you get 1.6c, then you bring down the plus 4

secondly you add 4 to 8 because they are the same.

third you subtract 36 by 12 because its on the opposite side which then you get 24

fourth you divide 24 by 1.6c which then you get 15

so c = 15
