2x + 8 = -5x - 1

Get variables on left; constants on right

2x + 5x = -1 -8

Gather like terms and do the math

7x = -9

x = -9/7

x is -9/7. distribute the two. after that you subtract the 8 to the -1. after you add the 5x to the 2x. finally you divide to make the x by itself
