First, you have to make these fractions into proper fractions, right now they are improper fractions.

To do this, we will take 9/8. 8/8 would be it's whole, and it is one over. so that means we have a whole, so 1. so then after taking the 8/8 from the 9/8 we have 1/8 left, so we and the 1 to the 1/8, which is 1 1/8. (By the way we ignore the negative sigh until we are done converting the fractions.)

So then we do the same to the 7/6, which is 1 1/6. Now we put the negative signs back and we have -1 1/8 and 1 1/6

So now we can find the Least Common Factor, which in this case would be 2, since both denominators are even numbers. which makes -1 1/8 into -1 1/2, and 1 1/6 into 1 1/2, so now we subtract.

We will subtract the wholes first, so -1 minus 1 equals -2, and -1/2 minus 1/2 equals -1, so -2 + -1 = -3.
