well, we know she ran 3½ miles, her brother that 5 times that much is simply 5 * 3½, well, let's first off convert the mixed fraction to improper fraction and then get its product.


\stackrel{mixed}{3(1)/(2)}\implies \cfrac{3\cdot 2+1}{2}\implies \stackrel{improper}{\cfrac{7}{2}} \\\\[-0.35em] ~\dotfill\\\\ 5\cdot 3(1)/(2)\implies 5\cdot \cfrac{7}{2}\implies \cfrac{5\cdot 7}{2}\implies \cfrac{35}{2}\implies 17(1)/(2)
